What the browser extension records — and what it can't see

Understand the usage signals AppVentory collects and the limits around them.

What you get

A clear answer for the colleague who asks what this thing is watching — and the confidence to roll it out to a whole organisation.

Why it exists

Your identity provider can tell you who holds a licence. It cannot tell you whether anyone opens the app. The extension closes that gap, and that gap is usually the largest single saving in the account — seats paid for every month that nobody uses.

It is about licences, not productivity. Nobody is measured by it; software is.

What it does not capture

The shipped extension documentation explicitly states that it does not track page content, keystrokes or screenshots.

It is designed to collect usage signals, not the content of the work taking place inside an application.

What it does capture

When the extension is installed and the user signs in with their corporate identity, it can record:

  • The SaaS domain or subdomain being accessed.
  • Whether that domain matches an application in the organisation's tech stack.
  • Session start and end signals.
  • Foreground time when the app is the active browser tab.
  • Background time separately when the app remains open but is not the active tab.
  • The most recent activity time and the user the activity belongs to.

A foreground tab is treated as active in the current extension logic even if the person is not actively interacting with the page, so usage time should be read as a browser activity signal rather than a perfect measure of productive work.

Who can see it

Removing it

It is a Chrome extension. Anyone can remove it from their browser's extensions page at any time. Usage figures for that person stop from that moment.

What the organisation gains

Usage figures that turn "we think this is underused" into "these eleven seats have not been opened in ninety days, at this cost each." In our example account, extension coverage of 77.78% — 14 of 18 users was enough to act on with confidence.
