Categorise and tag apps

Keep application categories accurate and use your own tags to organise the stack around the questions your team cares about.

What you get

A cleaner software inventory and better context for category-based analysis. Categories help AppVentory understand what kind of software each record represents; tags give your team a separate way to organise the stack.

Categories and tags do different jobs

Category is what the app is — for example accounting, design or project management. Category information contributes to analyses such as potential overlaps, so obvious classification errors are worth correcting.

Tags are labels you apply for your own workflow — for example Critical, up for review or ask Finance. Use them to make filtering and follow-up easier.

Steps

  1. Go to Apps and sort by spend.
  2. Scan the Category column for anything obviously wrong. Errors tend to be conspicuous rather than subtle.
  3. Correct them.
  4. Tag the apps you want to find again.
  5. Add a category in Settings → App Categories if you need one that doesn't exist.

Why accuracy matters

A wrong category can weaken any analysis that depends on app classification, including overlap suggestions. Correct categories improve the input, but they do not guarantee that a particular pair of apps will be flagged — overlap suggestions still need to be reviewed on their own merits.
